Tuesday 6th December: CHRISTMAS LECTURE AND TEA
Pamela Halford gave a very lively, interesting and entertaining lecture followed by Christmas tea at the Haslemere Hall. The talk, entitled ’Unwrapping the Christmas Story: Painting, Prose and Poetry’, revealed the many layers of history, custom and myth that make up Christmas: from the nativity to decking the halls, the sending of cards and much more. The lecture was illustrated by well known paintings and included a wonderful selection of quotes from Dickens, Hardy, Kilvert and many more, bringing joy, pathos and humour. Combined with seasonal cakes and a glass of wine (or cup of tea), this was a very festive end to the year’s programme of events.
