VISIT TO ISTANBUL: 10th – 14th MAY, 2010
WHERE EAST MEETS WEST, EUROPEAN CITY OF CULTURE

In May, Sarah Barnes organised another successful visit abroad for a group of 36 HDFAS members who travelled to Istanbul for three full days of visits to Turkey's bustling capital city. The group stayed in the Barcelo Saray Hotel in the centre of Istanbul and travelled around the city by coach, visiting all the important sights, by boat up the Bosphorus and by cable car to Pier Loti. Apart from a greater understanding of the history of Istanbul, members of the group returned to the UK with souvenirs which included several carpets.

The third day began with a visit to Topkapi Palace, including the recently renovated Fruit Room in the Harem. This was followed by a tour of the Underground Cistern built in the 6th century and a visit to the Covered Bazaar, the oldest and largest in the world.
